Unveiling the Cosmic Race: Racial Inequalities in Latin America

This paper provides evidence of the welfare consequences racial discrimination at individual and inequality country levels in Latin America. American countries built their national identities through a 'melting pot' ethnic figure: 'Cosmic Race' or mixed-race descendant from European, Indigenous, African populations. However, 'mestizaje' identity veiled income inequalities between groups. Using LAPOP AmericasBarometer data, I compile information on skin tone proxies for nearly 100 thousand individuals across during last decade. The purpose is twofold. In first part, use Spatial First Differences to provide causal estimates gap: out an eleven-color palette, every darker has least 8 percent less monthly per capita. also Oaxaca-Blinder decompositions that main mechanism driving two-thirds latter due discrimination, with substantial heterogeneity countries. second part paper, estimate newly measures level. Countries higher groups have worse economic development: one increase ratio over total correlates decrease 4 GDP results suggest that, besides justice reparations, progressive policies wealth can diminish improve aggregate welfare.
